The village of Borgo Rivola is a small town of the Municipality of Riolo Terme and is located within the “Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park”.

Why visit it

Here is King Tiberius’s Cave, the longest and most celebrated cave in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park.

It is reachable through a narrow, and in some points steep, panoramic path that climbs up the side of the chalky wall, connected to the internal pathways of the mining site.

During the climb, just before reaching the entrance to the cave, you notice the entrance to a quarry tunnel, among the many excavated in the 60s and 70s. Inside Monte Tondo there is in fact a network of artificial tunnels over 20 kilometers long.

From the entrance hall of the cave you can enjoy a splendid view of the valley and the underlying Borgo Rivola.
Over 4 km long, King Tiberius’s Cave is easily accessible, with normal clothing, for a stretch of about sixty meters up to the Gothic Room.

Beyond this room, one can go on only with speleological equipment, and the permission of the owner of the cave is always required.

The cave can only be visited with a guide and it is not possible to access it independently.
It is currently closed for work.
